Ballast Point: Watermelon Dorado

At the very least, Ballast Point is trying to do interesting things. Somehow they’ve developed a pedigree off of Sculpin which allows them to do whatever they want and charge whatever they want.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It doesn’t here. This beer pours golden, a little bit lighter than you might expect. Very little head. Fruit aromas are very apparent from the get go. The taste is quite odd. More like someone melted some jolly ranchers in the batch than actual watermelon. But I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt and say that that is just what happens to watermelon in anything but plain watermelon. The only plus side to this beer is it’s ABV: 10%. It certainly doesn’t drink like a ten percent. I am thoroughly buzzed and it felt like I just tried a regular IPA. I’d only pick this one up if you are really into watermelon.

1 1/2 out of 4 stars. Would trick a friend into buying.
